WRITING

At USC I work as a research assistant at the USC Center for Social Innovation where I write for the Neighborhood Data for Social Change Project (NDSC).

NDSC strives to provide insight into a range of range of issues affecting neighborhoods across Los Angeles County. Utilizing current research, precise data, photos, and compelling narrative, data stories drill down into facing Los Angeles communities, giving readers an opportunity to learn more about the issues confronting our region. Our work is published on the NDSC website and also on media partner KCET’s site.

The typical writing process for one of our stories involved a literature search, interviews with community partners, creation of data visualizations in Tableau, and the final design and layout the article. Over the course of my graduate experience at USC I worked on a number of stories on topics including climate change, financial education in schools, teen literacy, mental health, and food insecurity.

Here are some links to some of my writing:

• Economic and Financial Education in schools
•
Mental Health in Historic Filipinotown
•
Covid recovery in Southeast LA
•
Energy Burden & Weatherization

In my previous work as a film editor, especially in the non-fiction space, I was often involved in writing the projects I was working on. I was heavily involved, along with director Sandy Smolan, in writing the voice-over for this clip from The Human Face of Big Data for PBS.
